Detect ChatGPT writing — without overclaiming
People ask for a "ChatGPT detector" when they mean "does this sound machine-written?". That is a style question. No public detector can reliably name ChatGPT as the author, and honest tools say so.
Verified 2026-08-05What is actually measured
The engine looks for distributional patterns common in large-model prose: even sentence rhythm, safe transitions, generic abstractions, and low idiosyncratic risk. ChatGPT output often shows those patterns — and so do careful human editors, tutors and non-native writers aiming for "clean" English.
A high score means the text resembles generated writing. It does not mean "this session used chatgpt.com". Competing models overlap heavily once the draft is polished.
Edited and humanized drafts
Light paraphrase, synonym swaps and "humanizer" passes move a document toward the middle of the scale. That is why hybrid verdicts exist. Treating every mid-scale result as concealed ChatGPT use will punish revision itself.
If you need process evidence, ask for drafts, prompts or an oral walkthrough of the argument. The detector highlights where to look; it does not replace that work.
Honest framing for searchers
Pages that promise "99% ChatGPT detection" are selling certainty the science does not support. IA Checker publishes sentence-level signals, a multi-tier scale and a false-positive record so you can see the limits next to the score.
For classroom or hiring stakes, read the teacher and recruiter angles. The model label in the URL is a search entry point, not a forensic claim.
Questions
- Can an AI detector prove text came from ChatGPT?
- No. It estimates how generated the writing looks. It cannot attribute authorship to ChatGPT versus another model or a heavily edited human draft.
- Will ChatGPT text score differently from Claude or Gemini?
- Sometimes in the raw draft, rarely after editing. Overlap is large. Do not use the score to name a vendor.
- Why was my human writing flagged as ChatGPT?
- Formal, evenly paced prose triggers the same features. ESL writing and template-heavy genres flag often. Open the sentence view before you assume a generator was used.
