Check an essay for AI writing
Essays are the format detectors were trained to argue about. They are also where a wrong call costs a person a grade. Use the score to open the draft, not to close the case.
Verified 2026-08-05Why essays are both easier and riskier
Longer prose gives the engine more rhythm and vocabulary to work with, so an essay score is usually more stable than a cover letter. That stability is not the same as certainty. Edited human drafts, tutoring, and non-native fluency still move the needle.
Coursework also sits inside a power imbalance. A "Most likely AI" label in a marking workflow needs a human next step — draft history, viva, or a process conversation — before it becomes an academic-integrity finding.
How to read an essay result
Open sentence-level highlights. Ask whether flagged spans are the generic intro and conclusion, or the analytical middle. Stock transitions and tidy topic sentences flag often even in honest work.
Compare the essay to earlier submissions from the same writer when you can. A sudden jump in fluency matters more than any single percentage. Hybrid tiers such as "Humanized AI" or "Too close to call" are not synonyms for "cheated".
What the score still cannot do
It cannot name ChatGPT, Claude or any other tool. It cannot prove intent. It cannot replace your course policy. If drafting with AI is allowed with disclosure, detection alone is the wrong enforcement instrument.
For PDF uploads, extract text first so page furniture and OCR noise do not distort the reading. Then run the detector on the clean extract.
Questions
- Can an AI detector prove an essay was written by ChatGPT?
- No. It estimates resemblance to generated prose. That is an indicator for review, not proof of a specific tool or of misconduct.
- How long should an essay be for a useful AI score?
- Longer is better. Thin samples under a dense page are noisy. If the tool warns that the reading is uncalibrated, believe it.
- Do detectors flag ESL essays more often?
- Often yes. More regular cadence and narrower vocabulary raise scores. Build that bias into how you review before you escalate.
